History introduction

For the last 20 years CeBIT has become a worldwide event, illustrated latest innovations of information technologies, telecommunications, office and industrial automation. Thousand of manufacturers and users from all over the world come to Hannover every year. The exhibition debut took place on the 12th of March 1986.

Step by step computer industry became the main theme at Hannover Fair and helped along to be the world largest exhibition. In the end of 1950s office equipment was the third largest group of products exhibited at Hannover Fair. In 1960s Hannover Fair displayed the electronic industry boom paved the way to many inventions in the field. In the 1970s an exhibition contractor, Deutsche Messe AG, realizing the impotence of the office equipment, opened a new hall Halle 1, and in 1984 Halle 1 was registered in the Guinness World Records Book as «the largest single-floor exhibition hall». So there were begun the searches of a new exhibition name for these products. The name was found – CeBIT (Center for Bureau and Information Technology). Nevertheless in 1970s nobody suspected the future scale of the exhibition and IT-industry.

Soon the huge Halle 1 couldn’t allocate all potential exhibitors, more and more PC manufacturers and soft developers wanted to present its products at CeBIT. Center for Bureau and Information Technology became the World Center for Bureau and Information Technology. In 1984 after continuous debate Deutsche Messe AG decided that starting from 1986 CeBIT would be arranged separately from Hannover Fair.

Over 334 400 visitors from all over the world attended the first independent CeBIT, held on 12-th of March 1986. Hannover exhibition center was already completely in the disposal of CeBIT, it was the arena of the most grandiose and important annual event in IT industry. In 2000 more than 780 000 persons visited the exhibition, it caused the decision of CeBIT executive committee to prolong the period of the exhibition up to 8 days. CeBIT became the world largest IT trade fair.
