FAQ : Remote and Distributed Data Acquisition and Control Devices - answers[questions]
In what cases I-7520 and I-7520R converters of the RS-232/RS-485 interfaces can be applied?
I-7520 has RS-232 isolaton protection and I-7520R has RS-485 isolation protection.
The main rule: use I-7520R if it feeds together with the device connected to it through RS-232 interface. In other cases use I-7520. This rule also relates to the I-7520A and I-7520AR converters.
I-7520/I-7520A:
- RS-485/RS-422 isolation protection,
- common earthing of the power supply source and RS-232 interface,
- field of application:
a. Universal application,
b. Converter and computer (controller) feed from the separate power sources.

I-7520R/I-7520AR:
- RS-232 isolation protection,
- common earthing of the power supply source and RS-485/422 interface,
- field of application:
a. For the separate group of the devices,
b. Converter and computer (controller) feed from the same power source.

I-7000 modules have the particularity that there is a galvanic coupling between the supply lines of the external source and supply lines of one of the interfaces. Therefore, if the computer (controller) and I-7520 have not got the isolation protection, then the interface channels of the computer (controller) are connected to the network through RS-485. It means, that the computer (controller) can be exposed to the electromagnetic pickup and disturbances usual for long wirelines. In this case, using I-7520R module you protect your computer (controller).

The system has non-standard analog signal sources (for example, 0...27V. 0...15V). How can I connect them with the analog input modules?
non-standard analog signal source can be connected with the analog input module via resistive ratio device, which put signals into the standard input ratio. This resistive ratio device can be installed on screw terminal boards. DB-1825, DB-8125, DB-8225, DB-8325 type boards have breadboard area for supplementary elements (as resistive ratio devices, input filters and shunts) installation. Notice: meashurement precision of input signal will be depend on precision features of supplementary elements.
[questions]
My system contains resistance copper thermometers (RCT). Can I connect them to the I-7000 modules?
Yes, you can. I-7013/I-7013D single channel modules and I-7033/I-7033D triple channel modules are used to connect the resistance thermometers. Although they have not got RCT support, they can operate with the RCT. In this case the module has to operate in the resistance test mode, and the converting to the temperature operations according to the calibration chart of the sensor must be done by the computer or controller connected to the module.

Can I use two and more DK-8070/DK-8072 remote terminals in the system with one ROBO-3140?
ROBO-3140 v.2.0 supplied with GoodHelp software supports only one DK-8070/DK-8072 remote terminal.

I am going to use digital input remote terminal for measurement under heavy electromagnetic disturbances. How can I increase log "1" level?
To solve this problem you have to shield the wire connecting digital input module and sensor, and also to use additional scheme with Schmit trigger effect (digital comparator).

What is the difference between I-7011/I-7018 and I-7011P/I-7018P modules, which are used to connect thermocouples?
I-7011P/I-7018P modules unlike I-7011/I-7018 support two additional types of thermocouples: L and M. Notice: L type thermocouple corresponds to the well known Russian made Chromel-Copel type theromocouple.
[questions]
Digital input remote modules have common "+", and most of Russian made multichannel measuring converters have common "-". How can I provide measurement in this case?
The simpliest way is to use low-powered relay blocks or PCP. Relay winding (optoelectronic couple emitting diode) is connected to the output of the measuring system, and dead contact (optoelectronic couple open collector) is connected to the module input. The second relay contact (optoelectronic couple base output) is connected to the module common wire. During connection according to the scheme, you have to select elements, in order not to overload the output stages of the primary measuring converters.

Is it necessary to coordinate RS-485 line, when it is connected some I/O modules, which be located into significant distance from each other? What technical (schematically) solutions do you recommend?
The RS-485 interface theoretically supposes supply of units in general line length up to 1200 meters (4000 ft). However, in the communication line can be signal distortions and causing to loss and distortion of datas, if the units (modules) are located with significant distance from each other (more than 200-300 meters). Some paths are offered for this problem solution .
1) Install identical nominal value for extremities of long resistors-terminators' segment (magnitude from 50 Ohm up to 600 Ohm, depending on segment length; experiencly selecting solution via using such rule: if segment is longer , that resistance less) for the coordination of a wave resistance of the line.
2) Use special cable (" a twisted pair " the 5-th categories or cable with " for RS-485 " mark)
3) Use on both long segment extremities of modules - repitor of a series I-7510 with addition chance to receive the modules groups's optical isolator.
4) Use above solutions totally ; -))

Multichannel I-7016D, I-7080D (two channel) and I-7033D (three channel) modules have digital indicators. What information is input to these indicators?
According to the module settings:
- data from one of the channels ($AA8V command)
- data from the main computer or controller ($AA9(data) command).
[questions]
Do I-7011 and I-7018 modules have cold joint compensation sensor? Is it possible to read its data?
Yes, I-7011 and I-7018 modules have cold joint compensation sensor (CJC). It is used to convert the signal from thermocouples into degree by means of the internal microcontroller of the module. It is possible to read CJC data with the help of the $AA3 command.
[questions]
My system has dissimilar signal sources with different signal ranges. Could they be connected to the multichannel I-7017 and I-7018 modules?
Measurement range in the multichannel modules is set for all channels. So, it is recommended to connect one-type signal sources. However, as far as these modules measure current as a voltage drop on the resistor 125 ohm, it is possible to connect a sensor (+2.5V..-2.5V) to one channel and another sensor (+20mA..-20mA) connect to another. And convert the data from the second channel through the main computer (controller) into current.

DB-37 is used for daughter boards such as DB-24PD, DB-24RD, DB-24PRD etc., because they have DB-37 connector. Notice: these boards complete set includes IDC-50 flat cable only. DB-37 cable should be ordered separately.

A lot of analog and digital I/O modules have DB-37 connectors. What type of connector (male or female) does DB-37 have?
DB-37 connectors are of the female type.
